Men's Ice Hockey Falls in OT to SHU

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team lost 4-3 in overtime to Sacred Heart during Atlantic Hockey action in front of 1,099 fans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. SHU's Vito Bavaro scored the game-winning goal.
 
Taylor Best and Josh Lammon both scored a goal and recorded an assist while Kyle Dutra scored the other goal for Mercyhurst. Jonathan Charbonneau, Derek Barach and Matthew Whittaker tallied assists.
 
Mitch Nylen, Erlich Doerksen and Jeff Carroll had regulation goals for Sacred Heart (10-14-3, 8-12-1).
 
Best scored his seventh goal of the season to put Mercyhurst on the board first at 11:43 in the first period. Lammon created a turnover and knocked the puck to the end boards and Best picked it up and skated it towards the blue line. Lammon created a screen in front of Sacred Heart goaltender Brett Magnus and Best shot the puck and found the back of the net.
 
Sacred Heart scored late in the first period with a power play goal from Nylen to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Doerkson gave Sacred Heart its first lead of the game when he scored early in the second period.
 
Dutra recorded his sixth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Barach and Charbonneau assisted the goal. On the power play, Charbonneau passed it to Barach who then passed it to Dutra. Dutra wrapped it around the front of Magnus and put it in the back of the net.
 
During the third period Carroll scored for Sacred Heart to take a 3-2 lead.
 
Lammon scored his third goal of the season to tie at game for the third time at 3-3. Whittaker and Best picked up assists. Whittaker took a shot and left a rebound for Lammon to find and beat Magnus and send the game into overtime.
 
Both teams went 1-for-3 on the power play.
 
MU goaltender Brandon Wildung saved 31 out of 35 shots while Sacred Heart goaltender Brett Magnus stopped 22 out of 25 shots.
 
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday in Ohio against non-conference opponent Bowling Green. Faceoff is set for 5:05 p.m.
