ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Mercyhurst freshman
Sam Isbell had a goal and an assist as the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team held strong to beat the Rochester Institute of Technology 3-2 Friday evening.
The win clinched the third-seed in next weekend's College Hockey America (CHA) playoffs for the Lakers (14-17-2, 10-8-1) and marked their fourth straight win.
Mercyhurst got on the board first six minutes into the game. Celine Frappier scored her third goal of the season with assists from
Molly Blasen and Isbell.
R.I.T. (6-25-2, 4-13-2) bounced back six minutes later to tie the game on a goal from Cassie Clayton, but the Lakers found a way to retake the lead in the first minute of the second period.
Taylor Accursi scored her ninth of the season to put the Lakers ahead 2-1.
Brooke Hartwick and
Megan Whiddon picked up assists on the goal.
Once again, R.I.T. found a way to tie the game, this time at 12:11 in the second period. Caitline Wallace scored to tie the game for the Tigers entering the third period.
In the third, Isbell tallied the eventual game-winner 2:33 into the period with helpers given to Samantha Fiesler and Whiddon.
Jessica Convery made nine of her 20 stops after Isbell's goal to help seal the victory. R.I.T netminder Terra Lanteigne made 33 saves in the game.
Mercyhurst takes on R.I.T. tomorrow, Feb. 25 to conclude the regular season at 2:05 p.m.
