BELMONT, N.C. --
Kurtis Woodland and
Keyan McQueen scored four goals apiece as the sixth-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 12-6 non-conference victory over 10th-ranked Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
Woodland also had two assists for the Lakers (1-0) while
Colin Greenway chipped in with two goals and one assist.
James Crowe and
John Plaskey also scored goals for Mercyhurst.
Single assists were recorded by
Derek Richards,
Austin Robare,
Myles Young,
Oran Horn and
Ryan Vitale.
Winning goalie
Matt Wells totaled 16 saves and seven groundballs.
For Belmont Abbey, Kyle McGinley and Liam Osborne scored two goals each.
The Lakers opened the game with a five-goal run -- including three scores by Woodland -- and led the rest of the way.
After Belmont put in three scores, Mercyhurst got hot again with six more goals, including three by McQueen, to take an 11-3 lead. The Lakers held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Belmont Abbey outshot Mercyhurst, 38-28. The Lakers held a 27-21 groundball edge and 13-9 advantage on faceoffs.
The Lakers will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 26, when they compete in their first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Contest during a visit to Davis and Elkins.
