INDIANA, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team suffered a 73-71 loss to Indiana (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. The host Crimson Hawks won the contest on a basket by Brittany Robinson with 1.2 seconds left.
Mercyhurst's
Angela Heintz had tied the back-and-forth affair at 71-71 when she hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining. Then, Robinson hit her game-winner.
Natalie Piaggesi led the Mercyhurst effort with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Jalin Steel also scored 19 points while
Maria Lapertosa and
Angela Heintz put in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Heintz made six assists for the Lakers (16-5, 11-4).
Carolyn Appleby led IUP with 17 points, six assists and three steals. Robinson totaled 16 points and Maura D'Anna compiled 14 points and eight rebounds.
Mercyhurst led through most of the first quarter -- by as many as six points -- before IUP took charge in the second to take a four-point lead. The first half ended as Steel made a layup to give the Lakers a 31-30 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Mercyhurst led by as many as five, but the Hawks stayed close before taking the lead on a three-pointer by Lauren Wolosik. Steel answered for the Lakers with a trey, forging a 55-55 through three periods.
Mercyhurst led through much of the fourth, as well. Robinson put Indiana in the lead with 4:03 to go, making the score 64-63 with a layup. Steel had a response, yet again, hitting a three with 3:52 remaining to give the Lakers a 66-64 advantage -- their final lead of the game.
Appleby made a pair of free throws, tying the game at 66-all. Then, Megan Smith hit a layup for IUP (15-5, 13-3); Lapertosa came back with a pair of free throws for the Lakers; and Appleby made a layup and free throw to put the Hawks ahead 71-68. That set the stage for Heintz's three and then Robinson's winner.
As a team, Mercyhurst was 24 of 58 from the field (41.4 percent) and 7 of 22 from three-point land (31.8) while the Crimson Hawks had a more efficient night, going 24 of 46 (52.2) and 4 of 8 (50.0). The Lakers held a 32-25 edge in rebounds.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Clarion at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center for a PSAC contest. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. The Lakers will celebrate Girls and Women in Sports Day.
