Women's Basketball Steamrolls Past Clarion With 40-Point Victory

ERIE Pa. - Natalie Piaggesi had 20 points, leading a quartet of Mercyhurst scorers in double-figures, as the Laker women's basketball team cruised to a 90-50 victory over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers' point-total was a season-high.

Piaggesi, who finished 8 of 14 from the field, also had six rebounds. Jalin Steel added 15 points while Jessica Bell and Angela Heintz contributed 12 apiece for Mercyhurst (17-5, 12-4). Heintz made eight assists.

Mercyhurst set the tone of the game with a dominant first half, taking a 52-26 lead into halftime. The Lakers started the contest 7 of 9 from the field and 3 of 3 from three-point land to take an early 21-7 advantage.

In the first half, Mercyhurst finished 20-for-32 from the field (62.5 percent) and 8 of 11 from beyond the arc (72.7).

The host Lakers continued to pour on the offense in the second half, forging their largest lead in the game's final score.

For the game, MU finished 35 of 70 from the field (50.0 percent) and 9 of 20 from three-point territory (45.0), while holding the opposing Golden Eagles to 19 of 54 from the field (35.2) and 3 of 15 behind the arc (20.0). The Lakers also dominated the glass holding the edge in rebounds, 44-30.

Amesha Harden-Pulliam led Clarion (10-7, 13-10) with 11 points while Jordan Bekelja and Tyra Polite put in 10 points apiece. Polite and Delrika Jones-Carey had seven and six rebounds, respectively.

The Lakers will take the court next on Wednesday when they visit Slippery Rock for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
