ERIE, Pa. --
Emma Nuutinen scored both Mercyhurst goals as the Laker women's ice hockey team snagged a 2-1 win over Syracuse during Saturday's College Hockey America Contest at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Vilma Tanskanen assisted both goals by her Finnish countrywoman while
Sarah Hine and
Molly Blasen contributed single assists.
The Lakers (6-10-2, 5-2-1) trailed 1-0 much of the afternoon after Syracuse's Victoria Klimek scored the lone Orange goal with 2.2 seconds remaining in the first period.
Nuutinen eventually evened the score with 14:46 left in regulation. Hine started the play, creating a turnover along the left-wing boards. The carom went to Tanskanen, who fed Nuutinen in the slot for a one-timer.
Both teams had 5-on-3 power plays in the third period -- Mercyhurst shortly after it tied the game and then Syracuse late in the period -- but neither team capitalized, sending the contest into extra-time.
One minute and 11 seconds into the extra period, Nuutinen back-handed a shot past SU goaltender Abbey Miller. From deep in the Laker zone, Blasen sent a breakout pass to Tanskanen, who sent a pass to Nuutinen in the neutral zone. The puck got past Nuutinen, but then deflected off an Orange defender before Nuutinen skated in for the winner.
Kennedy Blair was the winning goaltender for Mercyhurst, totaling 23 saves. Miller was strong for Syracuse, finishing with 34 stops. The Lakers outshot their visitors, 36-24.
Neither team had a power-play goal; MU had three chances and Syracuse had six opportunities.
The Lakers, with 11 points in CHA play, leapfrogged SU (5-11-1, 4-3-1) in the conference standings this weekend and now sit in second place behind Robert Morris (12 points).
Mercyhurst will return to action next weekend with Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) games against non-conference opponent Ohio State.
