Men's Basketball Drops Close Battle At Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team suffered its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss of the season, dropping a 72-69 decision to Kutztown on Saturday.

Lorenzo Collier was the Lakers' leading scorer, finishing with 18 points, while Patrick Smith had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Malcolm Walters added 13 points for Mercyhurst (4-2, 2-1).

KU's Anthony Lee led all scorers with 26 points and five assists. Ethan Ridgeway contributed 18 points and five assists. Dan Cuevas scored 12 points.

The Lakers led by as many as six points in the second half, but the host Bears chipped away before taking a 61-60 lead on a Lee layup with 3:53 remaining in the contest. The basket was part of a 7-0 Kutztown run that left it with a 64-60 lead.

Dontae Williams pulled the Lakers within 64-62, but then Lee buried a three-pointer to push the Bear advantage to 67-62.

Mercyhurst closed its deficit to two points again at 69-67 when Ryan Roland made a trey with 19 seconds remaining. After a Laker foul, Ridgeway made 1 of 2 free throws, extending KU's lead to three.

Collier had Mercyhurst's next shot -- a three-point attempt -- that rimmed in-and-out. Kutztown's Ricky Hicks then added two more points to ice the game.

Mercyhurst held a 35-22 rebound advantage and made 27 of 56 shots from the field (48.2 percent), including 8 of 18 from three-point land (44.4). Collier, himself, was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. The Lakers struggled from the free-throw line, making 7 of 15 (46.7).

Kutztown (5-1, 2-1) was 25 of 47 from the field (53.2), including 6 of 13 from three-point (46.2), and 16 of 20 from the charity stripe (80.0).

The Lakers will return to action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest at PSAC opponent Mansfield.
