*UPDATE 12/2/17 1:00 p.m. - It was determined after the completion of this release that there was a change of credit to Mercyhurst's goal in the second period. Brooke Hartwick is now credited with the Lakers' goal with assists to Sarah Hine and Rachel Marmen. Hartwick now has three goals on the season while Hine and Marmen picked up there second and fourth assists of the season respectively.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team needed just one goal, a second-period power play tally from freshman
Alexa Vasko, to down the ninth-ranked Robert Morris Colonials at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday evening.
The Lakers (4-9-2) improved to 3-1-1 in College Hockey America play with the win. Robert Morris (10-3-2) suffered its first conference loss and fell to 4-1-2 in CHA.
Mercyhurst won a crucial special-teams battle in the game, scoring its lone goal on the power play while holding RMU's power-play unit scoreless on five chances.
Redshirt freshman goaltender
Kennedy Blair earned her first career shutout after making 31 saves against the conference's top-scoring offense entering the night. Blair made 13 stops in the first period and ten in the third.
Vasko's first career goal was assisted by
Brooke Hartwick and
Sarah Hine on the man-advantage. The Lakers scored on their second power play of the evening after RMU's Sarah Lecavailer was called for tripping at 7:38 in the second. Vasko scored at 9:28.
The shutout victory is the first of the season for Mercyhurst. The last time the Lakers shut out their opponent was Feb. 25 last season at RIT.
The Lakers look for their second-straight win tomorrow in a rematch with the Colonials at 5:05 p.m.
