Tanskanen's Two Scores Fuel Lakers Win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team improved to 2-1 in College Hockey America with a 3-1 road victory over Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena Friday afternoon.

The Lakers (2-6-1) got a great individual efforts from junior Vilma Tanskanen and freshman Summer-Rae Dobson. Tanskanen scored two goals to extend her goal-scoring streak to four games. She leads the Lakers with five goals this season. Dobson picked up a goal and assist and now has five points.

Mercyhurst got off to a solid start with two goals in the first period. Tanskanen's first goal at 10:56 came at even strength and was assisted by Molly Blasen. Her goal was followed up by Dobson's power-play marker at 11:38 to give the Lakers a two-goal advantage. Samantha Fieseler and Brooke Hartwick picked up helpers on the play.

Penn State (2-6-3) eventually cut the Lakers lead to one 22 seconds into the second period with Brooke Madsen's power-play goal.  The Nittany Lions had a couple of scoring chances in the third period, but the Lakers steadied themselves thanks to their penalty-killing unit, which kept PSU scoreless on both its power plays in the final period. The Laker PK went 1-for-5 for the game while cashing in on 1-of-4 power plays.

Dobson picked up her assist on Tanskanen's second score at 5:09 in the third frame to pull the Lakers back ahead by two through the final whistle. Sarah McDonnell added a solid effort in net for her first win of the season, stopping 22 shots.

Mercyhurst looks to build on their winning effort with another showdown against the Nittany Lions tomorrow at 2 p.m.
