ERIE, Pa. -- Four Lakers scored in double-figures while the Mercyhurst men's basketball team used a strong defensive performance to claim an 81-51 win over previously-unbeaten Roberts Wesleyan during Monday's non-conference contest at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Malcolm Walters scored 18 points and
Lorenzo Collier put in 17 for the Lakers (4-1), who used a 20-0 run to seize control in the first half.
Patrick Smith added 14 points and nine rebounds while
Derrick Ellis Jr. compiled 12 points, six assists and six steals.
Leading 13-10, Mercyhurst went on its 20-point streak. Collier had nine points -- all via three-pointers -- during that run while Ellis put in five points and
Dontae Williams contributed four. On defense, the Lakers forced eight turnovers while RWC shot 0-for-5 during that stretch, which left the hosts with a 33-10 lead.
The Lakers took a 39-18 advantage into halftime before Roberts Wesleyan (6-1) used an eventual 12-2 run to close its deficit to 54-36 in the second half. The Lakers then responded with a 17-2 run of their own, getting contributions from six different scorers, to take their largest lead at 71-38.
The Redhawks were led by Brad Williams, who had 11 points, and Peyton McLaurin, who put in 10. Jean Toussaint finished with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Mercyhurst finished 29 of 65 from the field (44.6 percent), including 9 of 25 from three-point land (36.0). RWC was 17 of 52 (32.7) and 4 of 18 (22.2), respectively. Roberts Wesleyan won the rebound battle, 41-39, but committed 25 turnovers to Mercyhurst's 15 giveaways.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday and Sunday with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games at Eastern Division squads Kutztown and Mansfield.
