Men's Ice Hockey Loses Rematch With #9 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The Mercyhurst men's hockey team was defeated 4-2 by ninth-ranked Wisconsin on Sunday in front of 9,067 spectators at the Kohl Center.

James Anderson had a goal and an assist while Nathan Bryer scored the other goal for Mercyhurst (5-5-2). Chris Makowski and Michael Verboom added single assists.

Jake Linhart, Will Johnson, Seamus Malone and Sean Dhooghe tallied goals for Wisconsin (9-6-2).

Late in the first period, Bryer got Mercyhurst on the board first when he shot the puck through traffic and past Wisconsin goaltender Jack Berry. Makowski and Anderson had assists.

Early in the second, Dhooghe capitalized on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 for UW. Linus Weissbach and Ryan Wagner added assists.

Later in the second, Malone shot the puck into the back of the net to give Wisconsin the lead at 2-1. Tarek Baker and Will Johnson tallied assists.

Johnson pushed the Badger advantage to 3-1 in the third as he received a pass from Cameron Hughes before beating MU goalie Brandon Wildung. Malone also assisted that goal.

The Lakers had a quick response 52 seconds after Johnson's goal as Anderson weaved through the Badger defense and beat the right side of Berry. Verboom had an assist on that play.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin had an immediate response itself on a one-timer by Linhart, who received a pass from Malone. That put the Badger lead at 4-2 -- a score that held for good.

The Lakers went 0-for-2 on the power play and the Badgers went 1-for-3.

Wildung ended the night with 41 saves for Mercyhurst while Berry stopped 24 shots for Wisconsin.

The Lakers are back at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Dec. 1-2 for a weekend series against Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart. Saturday's game will include a Teddy Bear Toss. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
