ERIE, Pa. --
Les Lancaster scored with 40 seconds remaining in overtime as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team finished its comeback from a two-goal deficit to defeat Sacred Heart, 3-2, during Friday's Atlantic Hockey contest in front of 1,531 fans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Jack Riley and
Taylor Best also had goals for the Lakers (6-5-2, 3-2-2).
Jonathan Charbonneau and
Derek Barach contributed two assists each.
Tyler Enns and
Zach Todd added single assists.
Brandon Wildung earned the win in net, finishing with 28 saves.
The visitors from SHU (3-10-2, 1-7-2) looked poised to spoil the Lakers' first home game in 20 days as they connected for two first-period goals. Jason Cotton put in the first goal while Sacred Heart was short-handed and then Stephen Hladin pushed the Pioneers' advantage to 2-0.
Later in the first, Riley cut the deficit with 6:27 left in the period, getting assists from Charbonneau and Barach. After a SHU turnover in Mercyhurst's zone, Charbonneau skated the puck across center ice and dumped the puck into Sacred Heart's zone. At that moment, a friendly bounce benefited Riley, who finished the play.
The Lakers were short-handed and their net was empty when they tied the contest with 17 seconds left in regulation. Enns' shot from the left point was blocked, but Barach hopped on the loose puck behind the SHU goal-line and slipped a pass to Best, who evened the score at 2-2.
Enns, himself, was called for a penalty in overtime, but after killing that off, Mercyhurst benefited from a SHU penalty. On the power play, Charbonneau slid the puck to Todd, who then teed the puck up for Lancaster's game-ender.
MU was 1-for-5 on the power play while SHU went 0-for-5. Brett Magnus had 28 saves in Sacred Heart's net.
For the Lakers, it was their first win when trailing after two periods; they are now 1-3-1. Mercyhurst is also 5-0 coming off a loss.
The same two teams meet again tomorrow at the MIC, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
