Volleyball Takes On Cross Town Rival Gannon

The Mercyhurst volleyball team will take on cross town rival Gannon, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Tuesday. The Lakers are currently in a three game rut against PSAC teams dropping games against Pittsburgh Johnstown, Clarion, and Indiana (Pa.). Mercyhurst (6-11, 1-5 PSAC) earned their last victory when the defeated Lock Haven 3-2.
 
Gannon has been on a five game win streak, with wins over Millersville, Pittsburgh Johnstown, Lock Haven, Indiana, and Clarion. Gannon (15-3, 5-1 PSAC) is currently ranked first in the PSAC Northwest division two places ahead of third place Mercyhurst.
 
The Lakers' offense is led by Shelby Chesko who has posted 168 kills, and 42 blocks with six of them being solo-blocks.  Alyssa Zirnheld is the second highest scoring Laker with 144 kills, 17 aces, and 19 blocks. Katie Baird rounds out the top three attackers with a 139 kills, 17 aces, and nine blocks.  Makayla Mollé is the primary setter for Merchurst recording 353 assists, while Abby Rose contributed 196 on the season. Freshman Hannah Vuylsteke leads the teams dig category with 245 on the season. Alyssa Kling has the most blocks for the Lakers with 54 nine of which were solo.
 
Gannon's offense if led by Ally Smith who has posted 166 kills, 20 aces, and 24 blocks on the season. Kelsey Ansec follows closely behind as she has posted 142 kills, while Rebekah Smith contributed 122 kills. Carolyn Knollman is the main setter for Gannon as she has recorded 479 assists on the season. Toni Leitshuh has posted 300 digs for the Golden Knights, Smith has contributed 267. Blocks are led by Maggie Wilhelm who has 50, and Ashley Kerestes who has 49.
 
The Golden Knights defeated the Lakers twice in the 2016 season both games were scored 0-3 in Gannon's favor.
