Men's Ice Hockey Loses Exhibition Game In OT

ERIE, Pa. -- Despite a hat trick from Jack Riley, the Mercyhurst men's hockey team fell 7-6 in overtime to exhibition-game opponent Ryerson at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday.
 
Riley also had one assist. Joey Duszak added two goals and one assist while Zach Todd scored the Lakers' other goal. Derek Barach picked up three assists and Jonathan Charbonneau, Michael Verboom and Patrick Piacentini each tallied one assist.
 
Steve Hartland scored the game-winner just 1:22 into overtime for the visitors, who climbed back from a 6-4 deficit.
 
Mercyhurst started the scoring off with a goal from Zach Todd, who was assisted by Joseph Duszak. Ryerson quickly answered back with a goal from Tre Folkes.
 
Riley scored his first goal on the power play with 3:03 left in the first period as the Lakers took  a 2-1 lead into the second period. His goal was assisted by Charbonneau and Barach.
 
During the second, Ryerson evened the board at 2-2 with a power-play goal bye Aaron Armstrong. The Lakers responded when Riley scored his second goal to put the Lakers back on top, 3-2. The goal was assisted by Barach.
 
Mercyhurst took two quick penalties, but Duszak scored shorthanded to extend its lead 4-2. Duszak's goal was assisted by Riley. Ryerson's Matt Mistele scored on the power play a minute later to bring the Rams within one.
 
Duszak scored his second goal, assisted by Michael Verboom to put the Lakers back up 5-3. Twenty seconds later, Kyle Tibbo scored for Ryerson.
 
Riley ended the second period when he recorded his hat-trick goal on the power play, giving Mercyhurst a 6-4 lead.
 
During the third, Ryerson's Taylor Dupuis came into net to relieve Brodie Barrick. The Rams then scored a pair of goals to tie the game at 6-6, sending the contest into overtime and setting the stage for Hartland's heroics.
 
The Lakers went 2-for-5 on the power play while the Rams went 2-for-6.
 
Laker goaltender Brandon Wildung had 27 saves. Dupuis was the winner for Ryerson.
 
The Lakers will be back in action on Oct. 13-14 when they open the regular season at Atlantic Hockey opponent Holy Cross.
