Lechner And Skibitsky Score Twice In Field Hockey's Victory Over St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, Ny. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 6-1 in non-conference play on Sunday. The Lakers move to a 7-9 overall record with this victory.
 
Katie Lechner and Alexis Skibitsky both had two goal games for Mercyhurst. Lechner scored the game's opening goal, and her season first goal, at the three minute mark she was unassisted, and moved the Laksers to a 1-0 advantage. Lechner's second goal game two and a half minutes into the second half when she found net assisted by Clare Ahern, pushing Mercyhurst to a 5-0 lead.
 
 Skibitsky, scored the third and fourth goals of the game in the 13th minute, and 29th minute of play respectively. Skibitsky was assisted by Christina Mertz for her first goal and by Katie Ballew for her second goal, these goals were her season third and fourth goals respectably.
 
Hayley Skidmore, assisted by Katrina Bruzda, grew the Mercyhurst lead to 2-0 when she scored during the 12th minute of play, this was her second goal of the season. Bryan Cook, assisted by Jessica David, scored her 6th goal of the season when she scored the last goal for Mercyhurst in the 49th minute.
 
Alexandra Vippolis scored the game's final goal just shy of the 61 minute mark when she found net for St. Thomas Aquinas, shrinking the Lakers lead to 6-1.
 
Victoria Triaga was the winning goalie for the contest as she posted a pair of saves and allowed one goal during her time 61 minutes in net. Mikayla Berndt played nine minutes in net and posted one save.
 
Mercyhurst was able to keep offensive pressure, outshooting St. Thomas Aquinas, 14-6. The Lakers posted nine total shots in the first half resulting in a 4-0 lead after the first 35 minutes of play. The Spartans did hold a slight edge in corners posting seven to the five awarded to Mercyhurst.
 
The Lakers will return to action next on Wednesday when they host Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at 4pm on Tulio Field.
