SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst volleyball team won 3-1 over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent Slippery Rock on Friday night The Lakers claimed sets one (25-21), set three (25-17), and set four (25-18). Slippery Rock claimed the second set of the game in extra points 26-24.
Katie Baird led the Lakers offense posting 15 kills, three blocks, and a pair of aces. Shelby Chesko was the second largest producer with 11 kills, and two blocks. Leah Kern, and Alysasa Kling each contributed 10 kills. Kling led aces with four, while Kern lead blocks with five. Alyssa Zirnheld led digs for the team with 21. Makalya Molle contributed 21 assists.
Slipper Rock was led by Kaley Fucci who posted 11 kills through the contest.
Mercyhurst claimed the first set 25-21, the Lakers grabbed their first lead of the set going up 3-2 off of a bad set. Mercyhurst's largest lead of the game was a four-point lead which they established going up 18-14. Mercyhurst held the lead for good when they grabbed a 19-18 lead breaking an 18-18 deadlock, and using this lead to clinch the set.
Slippery Rock responded and clinched the second set by a score of 26-24. The Lakers despite leading the set by as much as 13-6 where unable to hold of a Slippery Rock come back. The Rock knotted the action at 18-18. From this point, no team held more than a two-point advantage over the other. Mercyhurst held their last lead of the set going up 24-23, Slippery Rock responded with three points unanswered points to claim the set.
Mercyhurst took the third set 25-17. The Lakers were in a tightly scored set with neither team leading by more than two, until Slippery Rock claimed a 9-12 lead. Mercyhurst would not reclaim the lead until the broke a 15-15 deadlock. Mercyhurst would claim ten of the next twelve points scored holding Slippery Rock to just two additional scores through the set.
Mercyhurst claimed the final set of the match 25-18, grabbing and early 6-0 lead. Slippery Rock would respond by marching back to lead 8-7. Mercyhurst would retake the lead scoring two points in a row to lead 10-8. The closest Slippery Rock would come to taking the lead woud be was when they knotted the action at 15-15. Mercyhurst then played from the lead scored ten of the next thirteen points.
Mercyhurst will play next tomorrow at Edinboro at 5 pm.
