ERIE, Pa. -- A late header by
Ian Harris was enough to give the Mercyhurst men's soccer team a crucial 1-0 win against rival Gannon on Sunday evening at McConnell Family Stadium in downtown Erie.
The win puts the Lakers (9-4) at 5-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play, moving them into 5th place in the conference standings with four games left to play.
Harris' first career goal as a Laker could not have come at a more opportune time for Mercyhurst in the 86th minute.
Christopher Makengo earned the assist on the play, sending the ball in to the box where Harris was able to win the ball in the air in front of the net for the goal.
Mercyhurst's defense was stout and helped goalkeeper
Alex Brems earn the shutout. Gannon had just seven shot attempts for the game, but none were registered on goal.
Makengo had six shot attempts to lead all players. The Lakers out shot the Golden Knights 8-1 in the first half and 12-7 for the entire game.
Mercyhurst now has 15 points in the PSAC standings. They'll look to add to that total next week when they host Slippery Rock on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
