Men's Ice Hockey Opens Season With Draw At Holy Cross

The Mercyhurst men's hockey team tied Holy Cross, 1-1, during its first game of the season on Friday at the Hart Center. The contest also opened the Atlantic Hockey schedule.
 
Redshirt-senior Jack Riley scored the Lakers' lone goal as senior Jonathan Charbonneau and junior Derek Barach tallied assists.
 
After scoreless first and second periods, Mercyhurst (0-0-1) opened up the scoring with Riley's goal just 13 seconds into the third period.
 
Holy Cross (0-0-1) answered back with a goal from Michael Laffin at 7:53 to tie the game at 1-1. Brett Mulcahy and Tommy Muratore added assists.
 
Mercyhurst began overtime with a man-advantage but could not capitalize.
 
The Lakers went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Crusaders went 0-for-3.
 
Senior goaltender Brandon Wildung made 31 saves in net for Mercyhurst and Paul Berrafato stopped 45 shots for Holy Cross.
 
The two teams are back in action Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Holy Cross.
