ERIE, PA. - The Mercyhurst women's basketball team suffered its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss of the season, falling to Indiana (Pa.), 64-54, on Monday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Angela Heintz led Mercyhurst (13-2, 8-1) with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Maria Lapertosa and
Jalin Steel added eight points a piece.
IUP scoring was led by Lauren Wolosik, who had 17 points. Megan Smith added 11.
In a battle of two teams that were unbeaten in PSAC play, Mercyhurst twice trailed by five points before clawing back to take a 28-27 halftime lead.
Indiana (11-2, 9-0) took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the host Lakers 16-6 during the period and taking the lead for good.
Trailing 45-34 early in the fourth, Mercyhurst had a 5-0 run to close its deficit to six points, but that was as close as the hosts would get.
Mercyhurst won the rebound battle, 38-37, but IUP had a better performance from the field. The Lakers were 19 of 58 from the field (32.8 percent) while IUP went 24 of 54 (44.4).
The Lakers will compete next on Wednesday when they visit Seton Hill for a 5:30 p.m. PSAC contest.
