Wildung Records Shutout, Barach Records Three Assists in Men's Ice Hockey Win at Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- Jonathan Charbonneau and Les Lancaster each had two-points nights, scoring one goal and one assist each, while Brandon Wildung saved 26 shots on net for his first shutout of the season as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team defeated Niagara, 4-0, and claimed their first weekend sweep of the season in Atlantic Hockey play.

Stephen Hrehoriak and Taylor Best also scored for the Lakers. Derek Barach had three assists while Jack Riley, Michael Verboom and Wes Baker had one assist each for Mercyhurst (11-13-3, 10-9-3).

Charbonneau gave Mercyhurst an early lead when he scored at 13:12 in the first period, picking up his 13th goal of the season. Riley and Barach picked up assists. Riley left the puck for Barach, who took a shot that translated into a rebound for Charbonneau, who finished the play.

Best tallied his sixth goal of the season during a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity late in the first period. Barach and Lancaster had assists. Barach sent the puck around the boards where Lancaster picked it up and passed it across the ice to Best who one-timed it into the back of the net.

Hrehoriak put the Lakers up 3-0 with his fourth goal of the season. Verboom and Baker had assists. Baker passed the puck to Verboom, who took a shot and left a rebound out in front for Hrehoriak. Hrehoriak took the puck and put it into the side of the net as he fell to the ice.

Lancaster gave the Lakers a 4-0 lead in the third period when he capitalized on the power play, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Charbonneau passed the puck up to the blue line where Lancaster fired the puck and beat Niagara goaltender Jackson Teichroeb. Barach also assisted the play.

Mercyhurst goaltender junior Brandon Wildung saved all 26 shots on net that he faced while Niagara goaltender Teichroeb stopped 36 out of 40 shots.

The Lakers went 2-for-8 on the power play while the Purple Eagles (3-21-3, 3-16-2) were 0-for-4.

Mercyhurst is back in action Friday and Saturday when it hosts Sacred Heart. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
