Men's Hoops Storms Back To Force OT in Loss To Gannon

ERIE, Pa. -- Lorenzo Collier scored 16 points and fueled a late surge during regulation before the Mercyhurst men's basketball team fell to cross-town rival Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The contest was a Porreco Pride of Erie matchup.

During the final two minutes of regulation, Collier hit three-pointers on three straight possessions, leading the Lakers back from a 67-58 deficit to force overtime.

During extra-time, Gannon grabbed a 74-68 lead and, after Mercyhurst pulled within one point at 74-73 with 38 seconds left, it failed to convert any more points.

Stephen Spurlock Jr. added 16 points to the Mercyhurst effort while Malcolm Walters and Dajuan Dent put in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Dent also had eight rebounds.

Gannon had four scorers in double-figures, including Zay Jackson, who had 20 points. Evan Phoenix, who claimed the Porreco Pride Game-Changer award, registered a double-double worth 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Also for the Golden Knights (11-5, 9-3), Matthew Dogan compiled 16 points and eight rebounds, Damon Miraud scored 11 points and Jimmy Berger dished five assists.

The visiting Knights used a 13-0 first-half run to take a 37-27 halftime lead. They led until a 13-3 Mercyhurst stretch pulled the host Lakers even at 45-all with 10:10 to go.

The Lakers grabbed their only lead of the second half when H'ian Hale converted a pair of free throws with 6:18 to go, but the Knights responded to take the lead and, eventually, push their advantage to nine points before Collier caught fire to force OT.

Mercyhurst (7-9, 5-7) will play next when it visits California (Pa.) on Saturday for a 5 p.m. PSAC game.
