CANTON, Ohio -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team defeated Southern Wesleyan, 3-2, and Notre Dame (Ohio), 3-1, on Friday during Malone's Hall of Fame City Challenge.

Mercyhurst 3, Southern Wesleyan 2
Lauren Kenny converted 13 kills as the Lakers clawed back from a two-set deficit to win their season opener, 19-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-10.
Haley Adams added nine kills while
Sarah Puckett and
Sarah Wegrzyn put down eight each. Makayla Molle made 25 assists and
Freda Ireigbe had four total blocks.
On the defensive side,
Samantha Giardina and Puckett finished with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Katie Anderson and Paige O'Connor had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, for Southern Wesleyan. Annika Jones had 34 assists and Milicia Stamenic handled 20 digs.
Mercyhurst 3, Notre Dame (Ohio) 1
Kenny had 10 kills to lead Mercyhurst, which battled back from another early deficit to take a 25-27, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 decision.
Puckett finished with nine kills,
Hannah Tombaugh set 24 assists and Ireigbe came through with nine total blocks (all block assists). Adams added five total blocks while Giardina accumulated 25 and 10 digs, respectively.
Melissa Maczuzak led NDC with 12 kills. Tawny Flareau totaled 28 assists.
The Lakers (2-0) will return to action on Saturday with matches against Malone and Ohio Domincan.
