Volleyball Finishes Unbeaten in PSAC/MEC Crossover

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team went 3-0 during the weekend during crossover action between the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Mountain East Conference on Saturday. Following up on a 3-1 victory over Urbana on Friday, the Lakers posted two more wins on Saturday. The first victory was a 3-1 decision over Concord and, then in the closing match of the crossover, Mercyhurst (6-1) handled West Virginia State, 3-1.

Mercyhurst 3, Concord 1
The Lakers started the day with a 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, victory as Haley Adams, Larissa Cass and Lauren Kenny recorded 10 kills each. Makayla Mollé added 28 assists, Hannah Tombaugh dished 18 assists and Samantha Giardina finished with 15 digs. Adams also had four total blocks.

Adams and Sarah Wegrzyn had four kills each in the opening set before Cass pieced together a strong second set with four kills and one ace.

Concord answered with a third-set victory before the Lakers clawed out a win in the fourth. Sarah Puckett had four kills and two aces in the fourth. Wegrzyn also had eight kills in the set.

Mercyhurst 3, West Virginia State 1
The Lakers claimed a 25-12, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, decision to finish the tournament. Adams led the way with 11 kills while the Lakers had 14 aces as a team. Rose and Tombaugh collected 17 and 14 assijsts, respectively, while Giardina made 16 digs and Alyssa Kling registered seven total blocks.

Adams, Katie Baird and Freda Ireigbe had four, two and two kills, respectively, in the opening set while Abbey Rose served six straight times and registered two aces in the set. She assisted the final two points of the set as well.

After falling in the second set, the Lakers answered in the third. During that set, Baird and Giardina smacked two aces each.

The match ended in the fourth after Mercyhurst battled back from an early 4-0 deficit. With the Lakers trailing 15-10, a hot streak from Adams at the service line helped Mercyhurst build momentum toward a 15-4 finish.

The Lakers will return to action on Sept. 16-17 during a trip to West Virginia in which they will take on Wheeling Jesuit, Fairmont State, West Liberty and Virginia Wise.
