Volleyball Stumbles on Day One of WJU Invite

WHEELING, W. Va. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team suffered a pair of losses at the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational on Friday, falling to host WJU, 3-0, and then Fairmont State, 3-1.

Wheeling Jesuit 3, Mercyhurst 0
Shelby Chesko had 12 kills while Hannah Tombaugh and Makayla Molle finished with 19 and 17 assists, respectively, as the Lakers fell, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19.

Lauren Kenny added nine kills. Sarah Puckett and Haley Adams contributed eight kills apiece for Mercyhurst.

Defensively, Samantha Giardina and Sarah Wegrzyn had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

Fairmont State 3, Mercyhurst 1
Chesko led the Lakers in kills again -- this time, putting down 13 in a 25-20, 30-32, 25-20, 25-23 defeat.

Puckett added 11 kills and seven total blocks while Alyssa Kling finished with eight kills.

Molle made 24 ssists, Tombaugh had 19 assists and 10 digs, and Giardina finished with 15 digs.

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with two more matches at the WJU Invitational.
