Derks' Effort Leads Men's Soccer Past Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Thom Derks registered one goal and one assist to help the Mercyhurst men's soccer team defeat Bloomsburg, 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest on Saturday.

Jorge Gonzalez also scored for Lakers (2-2, 1-1) and winning goalkeeper Alex Brems recorded two saves.

Derks scored in the seventh minute, taking advantage of a misplayed ball by the Bloomsburg defense. Later in the first half, Gonzalez scored during the 27th minute, receiving an assist on a cross from Derks.

An own goal pushed Mercyhurst's advantage to 3-0 in the 73rd minute.

Goalie Jacob Pesarcik made five stops for the Bloomsburg (1-3-1, 0-2-1)

Mercyhurst outshot its hosts, 16-12, and held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Lakers will return to action on Tuesday when they visit non-conference opponent Urbana for a 4 p.m. start.
