#27 Baseball Cruises Past Malone

ERIE, Pa. -- The 27th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team blasted four home runs and claimed a 16-1 victory over Malone in non-conference action on Tuesday at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field.

Collin Fantaskey, Sabatino DiNardo III, Dan Karstedt and Matthew Schneider had the round-trippers for Mercyhurst (33-10), which scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Fantaskey finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Two-hit games were also recorded by Chris Gonzalez, who went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, one RBI and one stolen base, and Austin Alonge, who was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

DiNardo, Daniel Elliott and Hank Morrison (double) added two RBI apiece. Brendan Cox had one stolen base and scored two runs.

Jim Solano was the winning pitcher, giving up one run on five hits while tallying three strikeouts and two walks. Relievers Chris Vallimont, Matthew Keating, Jake Collins and Jake Hall worked one scoreless frame apiece.

A three-run dinger by Fantaskey highlighted the Lakers' seven-run first. Elliott opened the scoring that inning with a two-run single.

After Malone scored its only run in the second, Mercyhurst plated the game's final nine runs.

Gonzalez had an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball in Mercyhurst's two-run fourth.

During MU's five-run fifth, DiNardo smashed a solo homer, Alonge hit an RBI single and Morrison pounded a two-run double.

The Lakers scored their last two runs on back-to-back, eighth-inning solo shots by Karstedt and Schneider.

Cody Ballay was the losing pitcher for Malone (23-17), giving up seven runs on three hits in one inning while recording three walks and one hit batsman.

Austin Pachan went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Pioneer offense. Joe Crank also went 2-for-3 while Ryan Froman was 2-for-4 with one run.

The Lakers will be in action again this weekend when they take on Indiana (Pa.) in a four-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division series, which will begin Friday in Indiana before finishing on Saturday in Erie.
