Baseball Plates 31 Runs in Twinbill Sweep of Cal (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst baseball team scored 31 runs on Saturday as it swept California (Pa.), 12-2 and 19-3, during Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division action.

Game One: Mercyhurst 12, California 2
The Laker offense had eight extra-base hits in the opener: Sabatino DiNardo III and Hank Morrison smacked home runs while Cameron Balego, Brendan Cox and Chris Gonzalez had two doubles apiece.

Cox finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs, Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with four RBI and one run, and Balego batted 3-for-4 with two runs for the Lakers. DiNardo and Morrison added two RBI each.

Also, Collin Fantaskey was 2-for-3 with two runs. Jimmy Latona also scored twice.

Joe Gnacinski was the winning pitcher, going the distance. He gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings while recording five strikeouts and one walk.

The Lakers jumped ahead with single runs in the first and second innings. Gonzalez had an RBI single and Cox followed with an RBI double.

After Cal trimmed the MU lead to 2-1, the Lakers scored six runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.

During the fourth, Morrison had a two-run homer and Gonzalez ripped a two-run double. Latona added an RBI single during the frame.

In the fifth, DiNardo blasted a two-run dinger before Cox and Gonzalez collected RBI doubles.

The host Vulcans scored the game's final run in the sixth.

G.J. Senchak was the losing pitcher. In four innings, he was charged with seven earned runs (eight total) on 10 hits while finishing with two strikeouts and one walk.

Garrett Brooks batted 2-for-3 with a home run for the Cal offense.


Game Two: Mercyhurst 19, California 3
The Laker offense collected 21 hits, including home runs by Cox, Gonzalez and Morrison.

Cox finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs, Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, and Morrison finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs.

Balego added a 3-for-3 game with a triple, RBI and two runs. Austin Alonge went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Fantaskey was 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Dan Karstedt and Dominic Paolucci provided RBI doubles off the bench.

Matthew Minnick was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on sixth hits in five innings pitched. He had five strikeouts and three walks.

The Lakers scored four in the first, four in the second, two in the third and eight in the fourth to build an 18-0 lead.

During the first, Gonzalez had a three-run homer. DiNardo provided an RBI single.

Morrison cranked a two-run bomb in the second. Alonge added an RBI single and Latona drew a bases-loaded walk.

Balego had an RBI single in Mercyhurst's two-run third.

Then, in the fourth, Cox had a three-run homer and DiNardo ripped an RBI single before Fantaskey, Cox and Marc DiLeo drew bases-loaded walks.

Paolucci drove in the Lakers' final run in the fifth with his two-bagger.

Joe Yourgal was the losing pitcher for California (22-18, 15-9), giving up six runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.

For the Vulcan offense, Austin Logan went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Lakers (32-10, 19-5) will play their next game -- a non-conference tilt -- at home against Malone on Tuesday.
