#28 Baseball Drops Pair at #27 Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The 28th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team suffered a pair of losses to 27th-ranked Seton Hill, 9-7 and 11-9, during Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play on Sunday.

Individual game recaps are below:

Game One: Seton Hill 9, Mercyhurst 6
The host Griffins scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, winning on a game-ending grand slam by Chris Miller.

Austin Alonge led the Mercyhurst offense, batting 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. Chris Gonzalez doubled and drove in two runs. Sabatino DiNardo III also doubled.

Starting pitcher Joe Gnacinski had a no-decision start for the Lakers. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while recording seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Lakers used a pair of three-run innings to build a 6-2 lead. In the first, Gonzalez hit a two-run double and Hank Morrison had an RBI single. Jimmy Latona (single) and Brendan Cox (sacrifice fly) added RBI singles in the fourth.

Down 6-2 in the seventh, Seton Hill came back with a three-run double by Tyler Sullivan before Miller's walkoff homer.

Miller finished 2-for-6 with six RBI. Anthony Fanelli and Zach Heid scored two runs apiece.

Relief pitcher Tyler Morder worked 3 2/3 shutout innings for the Griffins to earn the win.


Game Two: Seton Hill 11, Mercyhurst 9
Alonge had his second three-hit game of the day, going 3-for-5 with a run, but another late surge by host Seton Hill led the hosts to the win.

Daniel Elliott also batted 3-for-5, driving in four runs and scoring twice, for Mercyhurst (11-8, 1-3). He doubled twice.

Gonzalez added a 2-for-4 performance with a double, two runs, one RBI and stolen base. DiNardo was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Also for the Mercyhurst offense, Morrison scored two runs, Cameron Balego had two RBI and Brendan Cox doubled.

Elliott had RBI hits in three of the first four innings as the Lakers built a 7-2 lead. He had an RBI single in the first, RBI double in the third and two-run double in the fourth.

SHU (15-5, 3-1) answered the deficit with two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Miller and Anthony Fanelli had home runs in support of Seton Hill winning pitcher Nicholas Behm. Behm got the win in relief while Jesse Cooper earned a save.

Matthew Minnick started for Mercyhurst, allowing four runs on six hits while totaling seven strikeouts and five walks. Andrew Ciolli was tacked with the loss.

The Lakers will return to action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Malone.
