AVON, Ohio -- Winning pitcher
Colin McKee worked seven shutout innings, finishing with 11 strikeouts, to lead the 20th-ranked Merychurst baseball team to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday.
McKee allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. Relievers
Jim Solano and
Jake Collins worked one scoreless inning each.
Offensively, the Lakers (10-3) had four extra-base hits. They were led by
Chris Gonzalez, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs.
Jimmy Latona also went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Also for Mercyhurst,
Austin Alonge batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs.
Cameron Balego added a 2-for-4 game with a double, two RBI and one run.
Hank Morrison doubled.
The Lakers took a four-run lead in the fourth inning and never looked back.
Daniel Elliott opened the scoring with an RBI single, Balego smacked a two-run double and
Sabatino DiNardo III hit the first of his two sacrifice flies.
In the fifth, Alonge drove in a run on a groundout and then, in the sixth, DiNardo ripped another sac fly.
Mercyhurst finished out its scoring in the seventh with three runs: one on a single by Alonge and two on a triple by Gonzalez.
Jake Welch was the losing pitcher for the Falcons (4-8). He gave up six runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts, one walk and two hit batsmen.
Troy Findlay batted 2-for-4 and Travis Smetana doubled for Notre Dame.
The same two teams will meet again twice on Saturday at Notre Dame, beginning at noon.
