#20 Baseball Blanks Notre Dame (Ohio), 9-0

AVON, Ohio -- Winning pitcher Colin McKee worked seven shutout innings, finishing with 11 strikeouts, to lead the 20th-ranked Merychurst baseball team to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday.

McKee allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. Relievers Jim Solano and Jake Collins worked one scoreless inning each.

Offensively, the Lakers (10-3) had four extra-base hits. They were led by Chris Gonzalez, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs. Jimmy Latona also went 3-for-4 and scored twice.

Also for Mercyhurst, Austin Alonge batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Cameron Balego added a 2-for-4 game with a double, two RBI and one run. Hank Morrison doubled.

The Lakers took a four-run lead in the fourth inning and never looked back. Daniel Elliott opened the scoring with an RBI single, Balego smacked a two-run double and Sabatino DiNardo III hit the first of his two sacrifice flies.

In the fifth, Alonge drove in a run on a groundout and then, in the sixth, DiNardo ripped another sac fly.

Mercyhurst finished out its scoring in the seventh with three runs: one on a single by Alonge and two on a triple by Gonzalez.

Jake Welch was the losing pitcher for the Falcons (4-8). He gave up six runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts, one walk and two hit batsmen.

Troy Findlay batted 2-for-4 and Travis Smetana doubled for Notre Dame.

The same two teams will meet again twice on Saturday at Notre Dame, beginning at noon.
