ALBANY, N.Y. --
Derek Richards recorded two goals and two assists, helping the 11th-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team take a 7-3 decision over Saint Rose in non-conference play on Saturday.
Brett Benzinger also scored two goals and
James Crowe tallied one goal and one assist.
Connor Enright and
Colin Greenway also had goals for the Lakers (2-0).
John Plaskey made an assist.
Also for Mercyhurst, Greenway,
Alex Misterman and
Greg Weyl picked up five groundballs apiece. Weyl and
Brandon May caused four and three turnovers, respectively, while winning goaltender
Matt Wells totaled six saves.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter -- goals by Richards and Benzinger -- before Saint Rose tied the game at 2-all on goals by Evan Doherty and Michael Tannenbaum.
Crowe's goal, with nine seconds left in the first, put Mercyhurst ahead for good. That triggered a stretch of four consecutive Mercyhurst goals before Matt Graham pulled the host Golden Knights (0-1) within 6-3, but that was as close as Saint Rose would get.
Knight goalie Liam Guiton finished with eight saves while Mercyhurst held a 23-17 shot advantage. The Lakers were 0-for-2 in man-up situations; Saint Rose went 0-for-4.
The Lakers will return to action on Mar. 5 when they visit Wheeling Jesuit for their Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. Faceoff will take place at 1 p.m.
