ASHLAND, Va. --
Colin Greenway scored the game-winner in quadruple-overtime, lifting the the 11th-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 9-8 win over Wingate in non-conference action at neutral-site Randolph-Macon.
Greenway also assisted the Lakers' game-tying goal -- scored by
Derek Richards -- with 3:43 remaining in regulation. Winning goaltender
Matt Wells totaled 11 saves.
James Crowe led all Mercyhurst scorers with three goals.
Keyan McQueen added two goals while
John Plaskey contributed two goals and one assist. Richards also made an assist.
Benjamin Brooks added eight groundballs to the Mercyhurst effort while
Alex Misterman was 13 of 19 on faceoffs with six groundballs.
The Lakers (1-0) twice trailed by two in the first half and headed into intermission down 6-5. A third-quarter goal by Crowe gave Mercyhurst its first lead at 7-6 before Wingate came back with two goals in the fourth to go up, 8-7. That set the stage for Richards' tying score and Greenway's eventual winner.
Austin Murphy had three goals and two assists for Wingate (0-2). Ryan Ormerod added three goals while goaltender Jacob Ormerod finished with 16 saves.
The Lakers will be in action next on Saturday when they visit non-conference Saint Rose for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
