MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Matthew Whittaker scored in overtime to give the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team a 3-2 win over the Alabama-Huntsville during the consolation game of Minnesota's Mariucci Classic. on Saturday.

After the Chargers took an early 2-0 lead the Lakers exploded in the third period with goals from redshirt-junior Jack Riley and junior Nathan Ferriero to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime. Whittaker got a breakaway chance during overtime and buried it for the win.

Freshman Joey Duszak had two assists while senior Stephen Hrehoriak, sophomores Jeremy Wu and Whittaker were all credited with one assist for Mercyhurst (8-10-1, 7-6-1).

Matt Salhany and Brandon Parker scored for Alabama-Huntsville (7-13-2, 7-7-2).

Riley got the Lakers on the board first when he picked up Hrehoriak's rebound and shot the puck into the wide open net. Wu also had an assist.

Ferriero tied the game when he picked up his fourth goal of the season. Whittaker and Duszak tallied assists on the tying goal.

During overtime. Whittaker was sent towards the net with a breakaway chance and he put the puck in the back of the net to give the Lakers a 3-2 win. Duszak picked up the lone assist.

Freshman goaltender Colin DeAugustine saved 41 out of 43 shots for the Lakers while Carmine Guerriero saved 21out of 24 shots on net for the Chargers.

Mercyhurst went 1-for-6 on the power play while Alabama-Huntsville went 0-for-5.

The Lakers are back in action Friday and Saturday when they host Atlantic Hockey Opponent Air Force Academy. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
