Women's Basketball trumps Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's basketball team earned their 11th season victory with a 66-47 victory over Lock Haven University, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday. With this win Mercyhurst rises to 6-0 record within the PSAC and extends their win streak to six games. 

Natalie Piaggesi was the leading scorer for the Lakers with 16 total points, shooting 7 of 11 attempts from the field and draining two free throws. Angela Heintz and Maria Lapertosa tied for second in points scored for Mercyhurst each having 14 points a piece. Jessica Bell was the only other Laker to post double digit points with 11. 

Becca Reilly, lead scoring for Lock Haven (5-5, 2-4 PSAC) with 10 total points. 

Mercyhurst opened up scoring 70 seconds, with a layup by Bell, into the game scoring was tightly knotted while the lead changed four times during the quarter, and despite an early two point lead scoring ended up 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. Piaggesi earned four of her seven blocks during this quarter. 

Five minutes into the second quarter Heintz drained a three point shot which broke the 20-20 scoring deadlock and set the Lakers offense in motion which earned a 12 point lead at the end of the first half with a score of 34-22. After the breaking the scoring tie the Lakers held Lock Haven to scoring only two points in the second half of the quarter. 

The Lakers continued to stretch their lead into the third quarter which grew to a game high of 21 points, ending the quarter with a 47-30 lead. To earned this game high lead Lapertosa had a good shot from beyond the arc. 

Mercyhurst maintained their lead in the fourth and final quarter finishing the game with a 19 point lead. 

Mercyhurst (11-1, 6-0 PSAC) will return to play at home on January 3rd at 5:30 against PSAC competitor Slippery Rock University.
