Angela Heintz finished with a triple-double, compiling 20 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, to lead the Mercyhurst women's basketball team to a 79-54 victory over Slippery Rock during Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. With the win, the Lakers stretched their winning streak to seven games.
Natalie Piaggesi added a double-double, putting up 19 points and securing 10 rebounds. She shot 9 of 12 from the field (75 percent).Â
Maria Lapertosa contributed 13 points.
Lexi Carpenter led Slippery Rock (7-6, 4-3) with 15 points and Morgan Henderson pulled down 10 rebounds.
After taking a 14-13 lead through one quarter, the Lakers (12-1, 7-0) dominated the second quarter, outscoring visiting SRU 26-8 during the period. The second quarter included a 15-1 stretch by Mercyhurst, which Lapertosa began and finished with three-pointers.
From there, Mercyhurst held its lead in double-figures the rest of the way; the largest gap was at 76-50.
The Lakers outshot their visitors, finishing 28 of 63 from the field (44.4 percent) and 11 of 35 from three-point land (31.4). SRU was 19 of 48 (32.8) and 3 of 18 (16.7), respectively. Mercyhurst also held a 48-31 edge in rebounds.
The Lakers will return to the court on Friday when they visit Clarion for a 5:30 p.m. PSAC contest.
