Durrell McDonald scored 19 points, leading a quarter of Mercyhurst scorers in double-figures, as the Lakers' men's basketball team defeated Bloomsburg, 74-68, in Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
DaJuan Dent added 14 points while Stephen Spurlock Jr. and
Malcolm Walters put in 10 points apaiece. Spurlock and
Dontae Williams had six rebounds each.
After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, Mercyhurst (4-2, 2-1) answered its visitors with eight consecutive points. McDonald had a pair of three-pointers during that stretch.
The Lakers pushed their advantage to 17-9 before the Huskies battled back, eventually going on a 14-2 run. Bloomsburg held a 43-37 lead at halftime.
Mercyhurst started the second half with a 6-0 run, tying the game at 43-43. Ties were written at 45-, 47- and 49- before a McDonald trey gave the Lakers the lead for good at 52-51 with 12:13 to play.
The McDonald three started a 9-0 Laker run, helping Mercyhurst to a 58-51 lead. The Huskies pulled within three, 60-57, with 6:37 to go, but that was as close as they got.
Christian Mortellite was Bloomsburg's leading scorer with 22 points. Karonn Davis added 20 points and four steals while Carnell McGirt hauled down nine rebounds.
Mercyhurst finished 28 of 56 from the field (50.0 percent) and 7 of 17 from three-point land (41.2), but struggled from the lone with a 11-for-23 mark (47.8). The Huskies were held to 20 of 53 in the field (37.7), 5 of 16 from three-point territory (31.3) and 23 of 31 from the charity stripe (74.2).
The Lakers outrebounded Bloomsburg, 38-36.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Sunday with another PSAC home contest -- this time, against East Stroudsburg, at 3 p.m.
