Men's Ice Hockey Heads to Minnesota for Mariucci Classic

Setting the Scene        
  • The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team will start the second half of the season by traveling to Minnesota to play in the 26th annual Mariucci Classic.
  • The Lakers will take on #11 University of Minnesota on Friday at 7:00 p.m. CT, before playing the winner of the University of Alabama-Huntsville vs the University of Massachusetts on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. CT.
Game Recaps
  • Before winter break the Lakers took part in a home-and-home series against Robert Morris.
  • Mercyhurst took the first game 4-3 with an overtime goal from sophomore Derek Barach.
  • During the second game, the Lakers and Colonials skated to a 2-2 tie.
All Time Series
  • Against the University of Minnesota, the Lakers are 0-1-0 from a 6-0 loss during the 2013-14 season.
  • Against the University of Alabama-Huntsville, Mercyhurst has acquired a 6-4-3 advantage. The last time the teams met was during the 2011-12 season where the Lakers swept the Chargers 5-1 and 4-3.
  • Against the University of Massachusetts, the Lakers are 0-1-0 with a 6-1 loss during the 2004-05 season.
Scouting Minnesota
  • With a 9-5-2 record the Gophers are nationally ranked #11.
  • Back in the beginning of December they swept Michigan State 4-2 both nights.
  • Leading in points for Minnesota is Tyler Sheehy with 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points. Justin Kloos is second in line with 18.
  • Both Sheehy and Kloos earned weekly honors with their efforts in the Gophers sweep of Michigan State. Kloos was named the NCAA Third Star of the Week and the Big Ten First Star of the Week while Sheehy was named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week.
  • Between the pipes the Gophers have Eric Schierhorn who has a 2.93 goals against average and a .882 save percentage.
  • Ryan Lindgren and assistant coach Grant Potulny are representing the Gophers and team USA at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.
 Scouting Alabama-Huntsville
  • The Chargers are coming out of a weekend sweep of Northern Michigan where they won 4-1 and 3-1, back in the beginning of December.
  • They have a current overall record of 7-11-2 and are .500 in their conference play.
  • On top of the Chargers roster is Josh Kestner with 16 points and Max McHugh with 14 points.
  • Brandon Parker was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Chargers weekend sweep of Northern Michigan.
  • Leading in net is Jordan Uhelski with a 5-4-2 record, 2.73 GAA and .908 save percentage.
Scouting Massachusetts
  • The Minutemen have acquired a 4-12-2 overall record so far this season and are on a five game losing streak.
  • In early December they defeated #12 Notre Dame 5-4.
  • The Minutemen are coming out off a two game series against Arizona State in which they lost both games 4-1.
  • Austin Plevy is leading the team with 12 points and close behind are Kurt Keats with 11 points and Steven Iacobellis with 10 points.
  • Leading between the pipes is Ryan Wischow with a 2-8-2 record, 2.82 GAA and .904 save percentage.
Laker Lineup
  • Barach is leading the Lakers in assists with 16, and in points with 19. Fellow sophomore Les Lancaster has 16 points and close behind is Lakers goal scoring leader junior Jonathan Charbonneau with 10 goals and 14 points.
  • In net, freshman Colin DeAugustine is on top with a 4-2-1 record. He has acquired a 2.73 GAA and a .921 save percentage.
AHA Honors
  • DeAugustine was named Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week for his performance during the Lakers home-and-home series against Robert Morris. He made a total of 83 saves during the weekend including six overtime shots.
  • Freshman Joey Duszak was named AHA Rookie of the Week for his efforts against Robert Morris. He scored the Lakers second goal during the second game and acquired a +2 rating.
Next Up
  • The Lakers will host Air Force Academy on December 6 and 7 at 7:05 p.m. for an AHA matchup.
