Men's Basketball Drops Contest To Roberts Wesleyan

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team suffered a 74-69 loss to Roberts Wesleyan during Monday's non-conference game at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Lorenzo Collier was the Lakers' leading scorer, finishing with 23 points, while Malcolm Walters, DaJuan Dent and Durrell McDonald contributed 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively. Walters addedc seven rebounds, McDonald made six assists and H'ian Hale compiled six assists and five steals.

Zach Panebianco led the way for Roberts Wesleyan, totaling 11 points. Malik Dare had 12 points. Quinn Carey and Dwayne Roberts put in 11 apiece.

The visiting Redhawks jumped out to an early 19-12 lead before Mercyhurst answered. The Lakers closed the opening half on a 9-2 run to take a 34-29 advantage into halftime.

From there, Mercyhurst (5-4) built a 54-40 lead with 12:12 remaining in the contest, appearing to be in full control, before the Redhawks enjoyed a 16-2 stretch to tie the game at 56-56 with 6:12 to go. Roberts led the charge back for RWC, scoring eight points during the surge.

After that, the Lakers led by four points on three different occasions, but the Redhawks (1-10) stayed close and took a 65-64 lead on a Roberts three-pointer with 2:39 to go. That served as RWC's final field goal.

McDonald made a layup with 1:23 left as Mercyhurst took its final lead. From that moment, the Lakers went 1 of 4 from the field and 1 of 2 from the line while Roberts Wesleyan closed out the contest with a 9-for-10 stretch at the charity stripe.

Mercyhurst outshot Roberts -- the Lakers went 30 of 59 (50.8 percent) and the Redhawks were 22 of 53 (41.5 percent) -- and held a 34-30 rebounding edge. However, the visitors held the advantage from three-point land (RWC, 8 of 19; MU, 2 of 11) and the free-throw line (RWC, 22 of 26; MU, 7 of 13).

The Lakers will return to action on Friday, Dec. 30, when they visit Lock Haven for a 4 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup.
