ERIE, Pa. -- Sophomore
Derek Barach scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team a 4-3 win over Atlantic Hockey opponent Robert Morris on Saturday.
Barach also had an assist and finished with a two-point night along with junior
Jonathan Charbonneau, who scored two goals. Senior
Stephen Hrehoriak also had a goal for the Lakers (7-9-0, 7-6-0).
Juniors
Patrick Piacentini,
Zach Todd and
Michael Verboom and sophomore
Jeremy Wu added assists.
Robert Morris goals were scored by Timmy Moore, Eric Israel and Rob Mann.
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals in the second; RMU took the lead twice, but Mercyhurst answered each time before taking a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Moore put the Colonials (9-6-2, 7-5-1) on the board first with a power-play goal, but just 63 seconds later, Charbonneau sent a rocket to the back of the net to tie the game for Mercyhurst. Barach assisted the Charbonneau goal.
Robert Morris took the lead back when Israel put the puck up over freshman goaltender
Colin DeAugustine, but once again, Charbonneau put in the equalizer during a scrum in front of the Colonial net to tie the contest at 2-all. Piacentini assisted the play.
Later in the second, Hrehoriak gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead when he and Verboom had a 2-on-1 chance. Hrehoriak passed the puck to Verboom, who skated with it and then passed back to Hrehoriak, who buried it in the back of the net.
The Lakers got called for too many men in the third period, putting RMU on the power play and the Colonials capitalized on it to tie the game at 3-3.
That set the stage for Barach, who scored with 28 seconds left in overtime to give the Lakers the win. Todd and Wu picked up assists on the game winner.
DeAugustine had 40 saves for the Lakers while Robert Morris goaltender Andrew Pikul stopped 38 pucks.
Mercyhurst was 0-for-6 on the power play while the Robert Morris went 2-for-9.
Both teams are back in action Sunday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center where the puck drops at 4:05 p.m. Don't forget to bring stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Toss.
