John Majors compiled a double-double, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds, for the Mercyhurst men's basketball team, which claimed a 70-61 victory over Daemen in non-conference action on Sunday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Durrell McDonald added 14 points while
H'ian Hale and
Dontae Williams chipped in with 12 points apiece for the Lakers (3-2). Williams also had nine rebounds.
As a team, Mercyhurst shot 19 of 44 from the field (43.2 percent) while holding the visiting Wildcats (5-1) to a 15-for-56 outing (26.8 percent).
Jaleo Wilkes was Daemen's leading scorer, totaling 16 points. Supreme Hannah added 15 points and Deion Hamilton had 14. Arif Mehmetaj finished with nine rebounds.
The host Lakers scored the game's first nine points and led by as many as 14 in the first half before Daemen closed its halftime deficit to 33-28.
In the second half, four consecutive free throws by Wilkes helped Daemen take its first lead at 51-49.
With the Wildcats ahead 55-54, Mercyhurst enjoyed five straight points, including four by Majors, to take a 59-55 lead. From there, the Lakers stayed ahead for the rest of the game, making 11 of 12 free throws. Daemen closed within three points with 35 seconds left, but Mercyhurst held the visitors off with its strong charity shooting down the stretch.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4, with a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games when Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg visit the MAC.
