Women's Hockey Drops Second Straight to #9 Colgate

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team lost its second straight game 5-1 after allowing five unanswered goals to the Colgate Raiders on Wednesday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center. The two-game set against Colgate marks the first series against a top-ten ranked team that the Lakers failed to register at least a tie against.

Similar to Tuesday's game, the Lakers showed great burst in the game's opening moments to get on the scoreboard first. After a shot from Maggie Knott squirted through the arm of Colgate net-minder Julia Vandyk, Celine Frappier was well positioned to score the loose puck for her first collegiate goal as a Laker. The goal was scored just 57 seconds into the game and put the Lakers on top 1-0.

The tide began to turn in Colgate's favor near halfway through the first 20 minutes. Megan Sullivan scored a rebound goal similar to Frappier's to knot the score 1-1 with 10:06 to play in the first period.

Colgate took the lead 3:11 into the second period when Olivia Zafuto fired a shot from the left point past Sarah McDonnell. Zafuto's goal was followed by two more Colgate scores in the period, with one coming from Shelby Perry at 11:02 and another on the power play from Bailey Larson to give the Raiders a 4-1 edge entering the final twenty minutes.

Mercyhurst outshot Colgate 11-3 in the third period, but Vandyk was excellent in net for the Raiders and didn't allow a goal since Frappier's score less than a minute into the game. She finished with 30 saves and was named the game's first star.

The Lakers (5-10-1) will look to turn things around when they travel to St. Charles, Missouri to take on Lindenwood in a College Hockey America two-game series on Dec. 2 and 3.
