Men's Hoops Wins PSAC Opener at Cheyney

CHEYNEY, Pa. -- Durrell McDonald scored 21 points to lead Mercyhurst as the Lakers' men's basketball team defeated Cheyney, 70-56, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

McDonald went 7 of 13 from the field, including 6 of 9 from three-point land, for the Lakers.

Malcolm Walters added 14 points and Stephen Spurlock hauled down seven rebounds for Mercyhurst (2-1, 1-0). H'ian Hale compiled nine assists and five steals.

The Lakers never trailed, scoring the game's first points on a McDonald three-pointer. They led the entire way after that.

After taking a 28-19 advantage into halftime, Mercyhurst increased its lead to double-figures in the second half. A trey by Walters gave the visitors their largest lead -- 59-39 with 6:21 to go. The Wolves (0-4, 0-1) pulled within 13 points later in the period, but that was as close as they would get.

Cheyney's leading scorer was Rafiq Marshall, who totaled 23 points.

As a team, Mercyhurst was 27 of 47 from the field (57.4 percent) and 9 of 16 from beyond the arc (56.3). The host Wolves finished 20-for-42 from the field (47.6) and held a 25-24 rebound advantage.

The Lakers will return to action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. PSAC game at Millersville.
