The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team was unable to overcome a three-goal deficit as it dropped a 3-2 decision to Holy Cross during Atlantic Hockey play in front of 1,410 fans on Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Junior
Jonathan Charbonneau had both Laker goals. Junior
Nathan Ferriero and sophomores
Derek Barach,
Les Lancaster and
Jeremy Wu had one assist each.
Holy Cross struck twice in the opening period as Johnny Coughlin and Ryan Ferrill scored goals. Only 3:52 into the contest, Coughlin capitalized on the power play for the Crusaders' opening score. Ferrill scored HC's second goal later in the period.
Late in the second period, Tommy Muratore found the back of the net to extend the Holy Cross advantage to 3-0.
Charbonneau finally put the Lakers on the board with a power-play goal shortly before intermission. Barach set up Charbonneau on the goal; Ferriero had the secondary assist.
The Lakers made a late push in the third period, including Charbonneau's second goal. Deep in Mercyhurst's zone, Wu dug the puck out to Lancaster, who found Charbonneau down the ice. Charbonneau finished the play with a wrist shot from the left point.
Mercyhurst freshman goaltender
Colin DeAugustine saved 39 out of 42 shots on net while Holy Cross goalie Paul Berrafato stopped 19 out of 21 shots.
The Lakers went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Crusaders were 1-for-5.
The two teams will return to action with another contest at the MIC on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
