ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team came short of completing a three-goal second-half comeback against Edinboro, losing 3-2 Wednesday evening at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. It was just the second loss for the Lakers on their home turf this season.
The first half was scoreless with scoring opportunities few and far between for both squads. Edinboro led in shots 9-4 after the first half, but both
Kristen Koch and Sarah Baskey held strong in net to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, Edinboro not only opened up the scoring but also went on a three-goal run. Danielle Chatten scored first in the 48
th minute after weaving her way through the Laker defense in the penalty area and finishing in the lower right corner.
The Fighting Scots kept on the attack with a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 55
th minute. Grace Kereky found the loose ball in the box and put it in the same lower-right side corner as Chatten, doubling the Edinboro lead to 2-0.
Edinboro found the net again in the 60
th minute. Alex Brown booted the ball towards goal from about 25 yards out and it found its way past the outstretched Koch, giving the Fighting Scots a 3-0 advantage.
After falling down 3-0, Mercyhurst finally bounced back to generate some chances offensively. The Lakers finally cashed in at the 74-minute mark thanks to freshman
Maya Bauer. After receiving a pass from
Maggie Hilton, Bauer maneuvered her way past the keeper Baskey who was playing well out of her net and had no trouble finishing on the wide open cage to make it 3-1. It was Bauer's second goal of the 2016 season.
Four minutes later, Bauer had another chance as she headed a bouncing cross towards the net. Edinboro's second goalie Allie Smyth had just entered the game and she was given a yellow card for colliding with Bauer in the box. That resulted in a penalty-kick opportunity for
Rebekah Craig and she converted for her fourth goal of the year, cutting the Fighting Scots lead to just one.
After the Craig PK, Mercyhurst was unable to take advantage of the possession they had to find an equalizer before the final horn. Edinboro took the win 3-2 for the team's ninth win on the season.
The Lakers (6-4-1, 5-4-1) look to bounce back on the road in their next game against Shippensburg on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.
