Men's Ice Hockey Skates Past AIC To Split Weekend Series

The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team held off AIC to split the weekend series and grab a 6-3 win during Atlantic Hockey play in front of 1,386 spectators on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
 
Sophomore Les Lancaster scored two goals, while red-shirt junior Jack Riley, juniors Zach Todd and Jonathan Charbonneau and sophomore Derek Barach each tallied one goal.
 
Junior Nathan Ferriero tallied three assists on the night and Barach picked up two. Lancaster, Charbonneau, sophomore Matthew Whittaker and junior Patrick Piacentini each had one assist.
 
Lancaster got the Lakers on the board first with a goal 5:38 into the first period.
 
Thirty-four seconds later, Piacentini and Barach assisted Charbonneau for the Lakers second goal of the game.
 
Forty seconds later junior Zach Todd sent a rocket to the back of AIC's net for the Lakers third goal in 1:14. Ferriero tallied the assist.
 
After a collision in front of AIC's net, sophomore Derek Barach capitalized on a wide open net to give the Laker's a 4-0 lead going into the second period. Charbonneau and Lancaster had the assists on the goal.
 
During the second period red-shirt junior Jack Riley put the Lakers on the board for the fifth time. Ferriero and Whittaker tallied the assists on Riley's goal.
 
Ferriero and Barach assisted Lancaster, when he netted his second goal of the game.
 
AIC's Austin Orszulak and Bryant Christian got the Lakers on the board late in the second period, with one goal each.
 
Ryan Polin scored for AIC in the third period, but it wasn't enough. The Lakers split the weekend series with AIC, with a 6-3 win.
 
Winning goaltender, junior, Brandon Wildung saved 28 out of 31 shots. AIC goaltender Zackarias Skog saved 27 out of 33 shots.
 
The Lakers will return to action on Nov. 4-5 with a pair of out-of-conference, away, matchups against Merrimack College and the University of New Hampshire.
