Men's Soccer Drops First Game in October

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost its first game in six matches 4-3 in overtime on the road against Cedarville on Tuesday night. The Lakers are now 2-4-1 in non-conference games compared to 8-1-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

This game featured a flurry of scoring activity early on, as five goals were scored in the first half, including four in the first ten minutes of the game. The home team got on the board first, as Cedarville's Sebastian Duque scored on a header off a cross to give the Yellow Jackets the early advantage in the sixth minute.

In the ninth minute, the Lakers quickly responded to tie the game at one apiece. Andrew Bennett his second of the year on a header of his own with the assist given to Chris Lund for his cross into the scoring area.

59 seconds later, Cedarville retook the lead. Aaron Plummer was set up for a one-timer from ten yards out by Joel Twinem to put the Yellow Jackets back ahead 2-1.

Once again, it took little time for Mercyhurst to find an equalizer, 44 seconds to be exact. Thom Derks ripped a shot from 15 yards out to the far post and in for his team-leading 15th goal of the season and pulled the Lakers back all square with Cedarville 2-2.

The next goal wasn't scored as quickly after the last goal, but it did occur in the first half. In the 28th minute Bryce Childers received a pass from Twinem in the box from about 12 yards out and put it in the net, allowing Cedarville to jump back into the lead 3-2.

Though there may have been a scoring lull between the Yellow Jackets' goal in the 28th minute and the next goal that was scored, both teams were still creating opportunities. The team's matched each other with 16 shots registered with Mercyhurst having the slight 9-7 edge in shots on goal.

Late in the second half in the 80th minute, the Lakers got their opportunity to tie the game and Derks was the man to take advantage. Cedarville was called for a foul in the penalty area to set up a penalty kick try to tie the game. Derks scored for his 16th of the season and knotted the game back at three apiece. The game would go to overtime.

In the overtime period, Cedarville found the scoring touch once again to score the golden goal. Levi Haight settled a corner kick from John Schwien and finished high in the goal to end the game 4-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The overtime loss is the second of the season for the Lakers, with the first coming back on Sept. 9 in a 2-1 defeat against West Chester. The loss also marked Mercyhurst's first loss in in the month of October (5-1-0).

The Lakers (10-4-1) look to bounce back against another non-conference opponent, Salem International, this Saturday Oct. 22 at Mercyhurst Soccer Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
