Men's Ice Hockey Outlasts Niagara, Claims First Conference Win

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team broke a two-all tie in the third period, scoring two unanswered goals on its way to a 4-2 victory over Niagara during Atlantic Hockey play in front of 1,488 spectators on Tuesday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Jonathan Charbonneau had two goals while Derek Barach and Joshua Lammon contributed one each. Barach had a three-point game as he also had two assists. Single assists were credited to Les Lancaster, Kyle Dutra, Zach Todd, Nathan Ferriero, Philippe Drouin and Tyler Enns.

During the first period, Charbonneau found the back of the net 33 seconds into the game with assists from Lancaster and Barach.

Later in the first, Dutra fed the puck in front of the net to Charbonneau and he put the puck past Niagara for the second time of the game. Sophomore Derek Barach picked up the other assist on the second goal.

With a five-minute power play late in the second period, Niagara's Tanner Lomsnes got the Purple Eagles on the board.

Early in the third period, Derek Brown tied the game for the Purple Eagles.

The Lakers fought back with a goal from Lammon, which was assisted by Todd and Ferriero. Ferriero directed a puck back to Todd, whose shot was tipped in by Lammon.

Then, Barach added an insurance goal. He accepted a pass from Drouin and scored on Niagara goaltender Joe O'Brien. Enns also assisted the play.

Brandon Wildung was the winning goalie for Mercyhurst. He saved 21 of 23 shots between the pipes. O'Brien had 36 stops for the Eagles (0-2-1, 0-2-1).

Mercyhurst held a 40-23 shot advantage and went 0 of 3 on the power play. Niagara was 1-for-6 on the man-advantage.

The Lakers (1-1, 1-0) will return to action on Oct. 28-29 with a pair of Atlantic Hockey matchups against American International.
