ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers fell by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 16-14.

Sarah Wegrzyn led the Lakers with 16 kills while Shelby Chesko finished with 14. Sarah Puckett, Freda Ireigbe and Lauren Kenny added nine kills apiece. Ireigbe also had five total blocks.

Makayla Molle and Hannah Tombaugh shared setting duties, collecting 31 and 23 assists, respectively.

On defense, Samantha Giardina led the way with 22 digs. Puckett contributed 14 digs and Wegrzyn came through with 11.

Visiting Cal was led by Danielle Hayes, who had 17 kills, and Seairra Barrett, who totaled 14 kills. Megan Litoborski made 50 assists, Bayleana Sowers finished with 20 digs and Lois van Schalk had nine total blocks.

The Lakers will be in action next when Slippery Rock visits the MAC on Friday for a 7:05 p.m. PSAC contest.
