ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team lost a defensive battle with number-one ranked Shippensburg 1-0 at Tulio Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped the Lakers two-game winning streak.
Shippensburg controlled possession for most of the first half, outshooting the Lakers 11-2 in the first 35 minutes. The Lakers had a couple of corner opportunities late in the period that resulted in shots-on-goal for
Emily Burns and
Taylor Balser, but both were stopped by Raiders' goalie Ally Mooney.
Just after the Lakers' chances, Shippensburg countered and scored the game's only goal. Forward Hannah Selassie weaved her way down to the end line close to the goal and then passed in front to Katelyn Grazen who was posting up in front of the net. Grazen put her shot on net and scored and the Raiders led 1-0 with 2:51 remaining in the half.
In the second half, Shippensburg held possession almost entirely on the offensive side of the field and didn't allow the Lakers a shot on goal. While Mercyhurst held the Raiders scoreless in the half, they ran out of chances to tie the game and lost 1-0.
The Lakers (2-11, 2-5) play on the road at Slippery Rock for their next game on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
