ERIE Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's soccer team defeated Pittsburgh-Johnstown Panthers, 6-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday. The Lakers push their overall season record to (6-3-1).
Six different goal-scorers contributed to the Laker effort, including
Jesse Albers,
Thom Derks and
Jorge Gonzalez, who had one goal and one assist each. Michael DiRienzo,
Jorge Fitzmaurice and Andres Alvarez also had goals for Mercyhurst (6-3-1, 5-1-1).
DiRienzo had the first goal of the game, scoring during the second minute with an assist from Derks. Gonzalez followed with an unassisted goal in the fifth.
The Lakers pushed their advantage to 3-0 on Fitzmaurice's goal in the 20th minute. Fitzmaurice was assisted by Gonzalez. Then, with the game nearing halftime, Albers snuck in a goal in the 44th minute, getting an assist from
Kyle Johnson.
The second half yielded two goals for the Lakers as Alverez scored in the 56th with an assist from Albers before Derks finished off the scoring on a penalty kick in the 79th.
Martin Jarc was the winning goalkeeper for Mercyhurst, finishing with two saves. Nate Kleya had 13 stops for UPJ (1-7-0, 1-5-0).
Mercyhurst outshot UPJ, 25-3, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
For their next contest, Lakers will visit the District of Columbia for a non-conference game on Wednesday.
