Box Score BOYDS, Md. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to down the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds 3-0 in a non-conference road game Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half, with the Firebirds outshooting the Lakers 10-8. Five of the ten Firebird shots were on net, and Laker goalie
Alex Brems corralled all five of them and kept the game scoreless entering the break.
In the second half, the Lakers changed the scoreboard first thanks to their super-sub
Jorge Gonzalez. His blast from 25 yards out in the 54
th minute was his sixth goal of the season and gave Mercyhurst the 1-0 lead. Four of Gonzalez's six goals this season were scored after entered a game as a substitute.
Firebirds goalkeeper Joao Brusamolin received a yellow card in the 60
th minute for his first caution of the match. In the 71
st minute, Brusamolin received another yellow card for a penalty in the box. His second yellow of the game resulted in a red card and an ejection from the game. His penalty also set up
Mark Roche for a penalty kick attempt that he converted to double the Laker lead to 2-0.
Mercyhurst scored its third and final goal of the evening in the 83
rd minute.
Mark Roche ripped a shot on goal that rebounded to
Thom Derks who finished for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. The Lakers went on to win 3-0.
The game-winning goal for Gonzalez was his second of the year. He also scored late in the Lakers' season opener against Notre Dame College on Sept. 1.
Mercyhurst (7-3-1, 5-1-0) looks to continue its five-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference winning streak on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Shippensburg.
